Charles D. Moody, Jr.
Teacher Education Scholarship

The Dr. LaVerne E. Thompson Community College Scholarship is offered each year to qualified community college students.

Students must meet the following qualifications:
1. Be currently enrolled in a participating YES Community College,
2. Have a good academic standing with the institution (2.5 GPA or better); and
3. Be active in school and community activities.

The application must be accompanied by:
1. Two letters of reference (one from a college representative and one from a community person).
2. A current official college transcript.
3. Written verification from a 4-year college or university, or a letter from the current community college advisor, on letterhead, verifying enrollment in a 4-year teacher education program.
4. A 400-words or more essay indicating your experiences and support of the YES Mission. Essay must be written or typed in an expository style including your professional/career goals and aspirations. The applicant’s name must be on every page of the Essay.

The Charles D. Moody, Jr. Teacher Education Scholarship was established by Charles D. Moody Jr. Mr. Moody is a graduate of Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and Howard University in Washington, DC. He is President and owner of the C.D. Moody Construction Company in Atlanta, Georgia. Moody originally established a $500 scholarship to encourage young people to enter the teaching profession.

Scholarships are presented at the Annual Spring Conference of the Young Educators Society of Michigan. Scholarship money will be received upon written verification from a 4-year college/university or community college, on letterhead, confirming enrollment. Awardees will be notified of the scholarship prior to the Annual Spring Conference.
